In the Court of Appeal sit the judges who influence and form the law of England, perhaps even more than their superiors in the House of Lords. The twenty seven Lord Justices of Appeal in the Court of Appeal are at the centre of the law’s development and deal with about 10,000 appeals a year. When a written law is uncertain or leaves a gap, it has to be interpreted, and it is the three judges who sit on each appeal who set most of the precedents that have to be followed by the lower courts. Only a convicted defendant can appeal; a prosecutor cannot appeal against a conviction. The court, usually 2 judges, can dismiss the appeal, quash the conviction or vary the sentence. Appeals from decisions of both divisions of the Court of Appeal are made to the House of Lords but there is no automatic right to it.

The Court of Appeal influences and forms the law of England, perhaps even more than the House of Lords, whose members are the superiors of the judges who sit in the Court of Appeal. The twenty seven Lord Justices of Appeal in the Court of Appeal hear about 1,000 appeals per month and their decisions strongly affect the law’s development. When a law is uncertain or leaves a gap, it has to be interpreted, and it is the three judges who sit on each appeal who set precedents that have are binding for the lower courts. Only convicted defendants can appeal; conviction cannot be appealed against by a plaintiff. The court, usually 2 judges, quash the conviction or can vary the sentence, or even dismiss the appeal. The House of Lords may decide to hear appeals from decisions of any division of the Court of Appeal but it is not obliged to do so.
